I use Maxifrig (R12A) in 3 of my older cars--only $4. per can, much colder than R134, and you use only 75% of the R12 charge. Absolutely No modifications required .
  Been using it for years--very happy with it. But you must have a vacuum pump, know what you are doing, and do all this yourself--you CANNOT take to a authorized A/C mechanic. Not DOT approved (same as 100w headlights !!)
