Buck-ninety-eight rattle can is really not the paint of choice. Unless.... naw a coupe owner wouldn't do that.
I used a bit of POR-15 chassis black. Takes a little longer to dry, but real tough stuff. Rust doesn't propagate under it.
Amazed at your dip-n-strip price.
Pls explain what you used for gasket at the tank/body interface.
Just removed, cleaned, painted the bottom of my tank three weeks ago. It slipped back in easily, even with about a gallon of gas still sloshing around inside.

After 33 years I guess a pin hole leak in the gas tank isn't too bad.
Messy though.
Tank is pretty easy to remove.
What was revealed is 33 years of debris and an old 'gasket' (? not really
sure what that stuff was.)
A lot of dirt worked it's way up around the tank over the years.
So it was a good time to detail the area (while the tank was dipped,
stripped, and then repaired; $40 and 52 years experience at it.)
A little, very light surface corrosion around 2 bolt areas.
Some Ospho takes care of that quickly.
I opted to put in a modern, hausgemacht seal around the tank opening;
providing a better, long lasting protection of the area.
Sprayed the tank with primer when I got it back, then a light sanding before
I applied the miracle material, 'engine satin black' spray. I love that
stuff! $1.98 a can and it works great.
About three coats did the job nicely.
Replacing the tank is a bit of a contortion; you have to gently set it in
place at a somewhat peculiar angle- trying to avoid the wiring to the tail
lights and such. Right rear (where the inlet is) goes in and down first.
Just take your time and it slips right into place. Wrench the bolts tight.
Wiring attached, hose replaced, tank down tube and recovery hose attached- I
was so excited I started to fill it with two stroke fuel!
*Fixed that right away with a magic marker. Big letters on the cans now.
Put about a gallon of ordinary gas in, inspected for leak; none observed.
What the heck, let's fire it up (been a week or more sitting.)
I think 'Dillo liked the new tank- roared to life after turning over twice.
So, the next 33 years he'll be pleased with the new(ish) tank in the back.
Pardon the bore to you more wizened types. Just trying to add to the
collective wisdom (for the archive.)
