The ball joints are sealed, unless you have a torn boot, in which case
you should replace the unit. As far as I know, you can't remove and
replace the boots without doing more harm than good.

Subject: [BMWCSRegistry] Control Arm Bushings & Ball Joint

I purchased a pair of control arms and was going to use urethane
bushings from Mesa. Unfortunately the control arms I purchased are
wider than the original so the bushings and sleeve don't fit well. So
now I am planning on using the original control arm since the ball joint
looks to be in good shape. I was thinking that it would be a good idea
to re-grease the ball joint. Has anyone ever done that and what's
involved with putting a new dust cap back on? Does it just slip on or
is it much more complicated than that? Can I even find a new dust cap?

Thanks,

Lou
