1976 AC technology is pale by comparison to what is available now.
Some parts and pieces of the old take out system might be useful- but don't
expect the high standard of performance found in today's systems if you put
this old system it in the forthcoming tii.
I just happen to be writing an article (well, sort of ) on this subject for
the Porsche 356 gang at their Registry.
It's in two parts- and I'd be glad to send it to you Steve.
More to specifics of your question (and assuming it's a takeout); If there's
a York compressor in the kit your buddy is selling- it's throw away crap.
However, the mount it resides upon is quite valuable.
The hoses are junk (by now) but should be kept for measuring and ciphering
the routing (by looking at the bends). Ends are useless.
The interior compartment housing (plenum) might be of some use (but, see if
you can get a look at the real 'maker' of the kit- there were a few back
then, like ArticAire and FrigidAire- both from Texas, making most of the
'aftermarket' dealer installed AC systems back then).
Maybe 'useful' in that it would be easier to use it for housing the new
evaporator you're bound to get to go in it.
The condenser may be useful- it's mounted up front in front of the radiator-
but better ones can be found in a junk yard (out of Japanese econoboxes)
now.
The drier should be disposed of. Useless.
Switches and wiring, see above about the hoses.
[nota bene; if it's a pre-installed take out applies to above comments.]
What's it worth? Certainly the $500, if it's truly NIB.
Snap it up.
If there's a York compressor in the kit, it's still crap (replace with a
Saden/Sankyo unit).
If it's a take out- offer him $200, see if that gets it!
NOW- about AC being a 'sacrilege' (in old cars):
Sure, they never put them in the cars back then (50's, 60's)- but that
shouldn't preclude you from having one to further enhance the enjoyment of
driving your old sports car.
Unless you bought the thing to be part of your retirement portfolio- drive
it like it was meant to be, and put AC just to make it that much better!
