While it's still in the car, get or use an air impact gun to loosen the nut.? You won't have to hold the inner item when you do that.? Once it's loose, put it back on finger tight then drive home gently and finish the job.? Go back to the impact gun to tighten the nut back on.
Latest good place for prices seems to be www.autohausaz.com but as with all internet suppliers, you have to know the brand they're selling.? Most are simply WorldPac resellers anyway.

Subject: [BMWCSRegistry] Front Strut removal
I am replacing my front struts.? Is there any special trick to loosening the 27 mm nut while holding the 11 mm extension of the strut?? When I removed the strut on my 740i there was a hex insert into the strut so it was easier to insert a hex key while putting a wrench on the nut.? The strut on my CSI seems a bit trickier due to lack of space.? Also, any suggestions on where to get strut bearings?? Bavarian? Auto has them for about $120 and CSI has them for about $100.
Thanks,
Lou
