The '86 would be a M30 b34 and the '90 would be a M30 b35 with 1mm larger 
exh valves, much larger exh ports, much more aggressive cam, and inproved 
intake manifold (higher flow).  The '90 b35 is a 208 HP engine while the '86 
b34 is only 181 HP if I remember correctly.  The b35 coupled with the 
motronic from a 1989 635, the 173(maybe 179) ecu is the best setup w/ stock 
NA parts.

All from memory...I can verify before you buy if you need help.
