Disagee away, sir but the documented evidence supports my position.
Owners of cars are free to do whatever they wish with their vehicles
- even to the limit of absurdity such as a sound system worth more
than the car in which it is installed. But I do reserve the right to
dispute and critique the wisdom of such expenditures and express my
opinion thereof.
> a) If trunk wings are a fashion statement [to some], then why
>would air dams not fall into the same category?
They surely do except, on a track, No substantial function has been
shown to be served on highways even in modest excess of speed limits.
> b) '...a dumbness - as about as [sic] functional as the fins of
>cars of my youth' This is simply untrue; review aerodynamic
>fundamentals before suggesting unfounded opinions as fact.
Are you saying the enormous fins of a the 1950-60's DeSoto, Cadillac,
etc really served some function beyond style and fashion?
>c) '...fashion statement trunk wings' Although not technically
>wings, the rear spoilers on E28s are well documented for providing
>added stability at higher speeds (> 80 MPH, on track of course).
You just said it yourself - probably even at 80 they may not do much.
The grey haired or balding driver of that that Buick with the wings
or spoilers has likely not even even seen a track other than on TV.
>d) '...why spend $350 for a piece that is useless...' Air dams
>have been demonstrated to reduce the drag coefficient of virtually
>any automobile; therefore, over a sufficient period of time your
>initial investment will be recovered, after which time (if you don't
>spend too much touching up damage from stones...) you will realize a
>return on your investment. Now about those troublesome curbs.just
>stop your car before you hit the 'parking barrier.'
Again - you said it. Whatever minor saving would hardly offset repair
and replacement of air dams when the first possum crossing the road
is encountered. About the parking barriers, the hundreds of chips and
scars on these things testify as to how easy it is to stop your car
while still keeping its tail out of traffic.
Parking barriers should stop a car via its tires, not its body metal
or plastic.
>Actually, this reply may be a bit overstated. My fundamental
>response is more succinctly expressed with: Dude - I think those
>front spoilers look real cool!
Sorry Larry, but I stopped being a "Dude" a while back - nor do I
wear my cap backward or have tattoos and piercings and do not find
chubby girls/women in low rider/plumbers ass revealing jeans
appealing. Especially when the wearers approach the Golden Age.
But I respect different strokes.
