[BMWCSRegistry] OEM E3/E9 alloy wheels with tires, $250

According to the Palo Alto Speedometer error calculator the appropriate "plus" sizes (using 195/70 R14 as base) are:

205/60-15
205/55-16 (this is what I have on my fronts w/16" Alpina staggered wheels)
225/50-16(this is what I have on my rears w/16" Alpina staggered wheels)
245/40-17 (which I think would be quite a bit "wide" for an E9)

Here's the Web site address for your enjoyment:

  Tony,

I accidentally hit "send" instead of "save as draft" when my phone rang, thanks for getting started on answering my questions. It seems to explain why my 911 has bigger rears from the factory (205's in front, 225's in the rear) -- they were trying to dial in more understeer, making it more difficult to swap ends when you get in trouble?

So, to continue, following the logic of "plus one" tire size upgrading (10mm more section width for every inch increase in rim size, I think?), this implies that 205/60/15, 215/50/16, and 225/40/17 are the sizes to use to keep the speedo calibration intact and the understeer/oversteer equation unchanged?

  Thanks,

  ChuckATL

I think it's more about appearance than performance. Staggered fitment is a recipe for amplifying understeer, not exactly the ultimate in performance. The e9 has narrow front wheel wells and the rear track is narrower than the front, so staggered fitment lets you fill the rear wheel wells. An e3 can handle 8" wheels all around with the correct offset. having the same size tire on all four corners is most always the best bet for handling; you fine tune with springs, anti-roll bars and tire pressure.

Regards wheel damage on larger wheels with low profile tires -- I have 8x17" wheels (BBS wheels from an e39) with 235/45-17 tires on my e12. Last week I had a brain fart and drove over a curb. I killed two tires and bent the right front spindle, but both right side wheels came through straight and true. Good quality wheels are strong, they don't bend easily.

This reminds me of something I've been wondering about for a while -- why are the "staggered" 7 x 16 and 8 x 16 wheels considered by many to be the ultimate (performance) wheel combo for the E3/E9?

If one follows the "plus one" logic for increasing tire/rim size (10mm more section

        Thanks for the info,
I can't get a real good look at the condition of the wheels nor the tread depth on the tires but it does seem to be a decent deal. 195 X 14 tires are getting more and more rare as most every manufacturer is using scary skinny bicycle sidewall width tires that look like they would scrape the road on a rapid tight turn.
And smack a pothole and kiss off one of those $500+ rims.
