[BMWCSRegistry] An ADDITIONAL esoteric question for the Cognisenti

The strongest of the 6 cylinder 5 speeds is apparently the Getrag 265. This
was used from 78?-81 and then again in 1985 and yet again in the E30 M3s.
I've read that some M5/M6s have converted to the 265 as it is apparently
stronger than the Getrag 280 the M cars used. The Getrag 260 used in 85-89
US 635s was weak enough that it was revised after it's initial use in 82-84
US 633s. The close ratio trans is a variation of the Getrag 265, but
apparently not as strong.

For me, unless I was going to do a lot of track time, I would feel
comfortable with any but the early 260, but I don't beat on my trans!

Subject: [BMWCSRegistry] An ADDITIONAL esoteric question for the Cognisenti

Forgive this question as it is not specifically Coupe related in the true
sense.

I know there are some on the register with M5s. I have the chance to buy a
M5 engine which I am thinking of doing for my 635. The question is will the
existing gearbox take the power?
I know the M5 had a larger 5 speed overdrive box than I have at the moment
in 635 but will the existing box take it. I also have a 5 speed close ratio
dog leg gearbox if that would be better - although I have heard they are not
as strong as we would like.

If it helps digest this question I still have my CS. (phew!)

Any comments welcome.

David.
