I too love soccer. I remember getting laughed out of my high school athletic
director’s office for wanting to start intramural soccer in 1978. And now,
ironically, that school cancelled football and retained soccer, to my glee.
The Beckham thing which triggers me is the multimillion Hollywood fabulous
thing and the “weight on him to “save” American Soccer or “to put it on the map”
. Anyone remember Pele?
I just think I lost something when the ex pat landed to save the sport. Wow,
I sound like a typical Massachusetts colonialist here wanting the British
out.

I wouldn't worry about soccer. If the money/glamour set thinks it will take
Posh's husband to jump start professional soccer (again) then let them.
When the Chicago Fire was temporarily relocated to the suburbs while their new
stadium was being built, attendance rose dramatically. "Who's driving out to
Naperville to watch soccer?" they asked.

People were amazed, the clueless newspaper writers dumbfounded. I guess
they've never driven around the 'burbs on a Saturday morning, to see literally
hundreds of soccer games being played by kids who will never wear a football
helmet or baseball cleats.

Ironically, last year's World Cup final was the same day as the USG
Sheetrock 400 NASCAR race. Since my wife was a host for USG, I spent the day
alternating from a NASCAR pit tour to watching the match on TV in the plush
sponsor's tent, and back to the race in the afternoon. Strange day, indeed.
