Subject: [BMWCSRegistry] BMW Car Story
This is my other favorite car story.
The scene: Trans-Canada 1, a two-lane road in 1971, Western Canada, forests
and open space. Late May.
Me: driving my almost brand new 1971 BMW 1600. The 12,000 mile solo road
trip started in Bucks County, PA continued through Detroit crossing into Canada
at Sault St. Marie over the Straits of Mackinaw.
Cruising at 85-90 mph, the car is running better each day. The road is
almost empty; the speed limit is 70, and the polite anti-war truckers pull onto
the shoulder when they see faster cars closing on them.
So I am in this heavily forested area and out of the corner of my eye I see
this helicopter pacing me at about 500 feet. Big letters on the side say
RCMP. Now I remember signs saying speed checked from air or some such claptrap.
I slow from 90 to 70 - he disappears. Next thing I know he is on my right,
again, pacing me. I speed up to 90, he disappears, pops up on my left. We do
this a couple more times, speeding up and slowing down.
By now we are in OPEN COUNTRY. All of a sudden the Bird is 100 yards in
front of me and 50 feet off the ground.
We are road racing!!!
After about 10 second he tilts the blades a couple of times and is gone.
Five minutes later I pass a RCMP barracks and there is a helicopter sitting
on the pad in front.
If there is a heaven, I was there briefly all those 26 years ago.

PS Since that day I have owned, sometimes briefly, 2 Bavaria's 2 Si's
one 2800CS 2 CSi's and the
one that holds a special place in my heart, the 1600.
