Fw: [BMWCSRegistry] CS Question

Importing a car over 25 years old makes it exempt from DOT safety standards. If you bring that car into CA, you still have to abide by CA DMV smog rules. So if you live in CA, it makes since to import a 75 or older car (they are smog exempt) unless you want to deal with the smog police. To learn more about importing old Euro spec BMW's, check this story out. http://www.bayarea02.com/features/importing/index.html

This also brings up a question that I have about importing non-US emissions spec cars (there's a real nice '86 Jag XJ12 in Canada that I have my eye on -- for the wife, BTW). Chuckie the hot rodder plans to eventually put a Chevy V8 into it, but I would still need to get it into the country as it presently is.

Anybody here know much about what I would need to do? Anything older than 25 years doesn't need an annual emissions test around Atlanta, so I would still have that to deal with for a few more years as well. Does the EPA also have a 25 year deal of some sort? I'm hoping I could get the required emissions gear off of a '86 that's presently sitting in a junkyard somewhere in the US?

TIA,

ChuckATL
