No he's not -- I sold my condition 2+ 3.0 CSL (VIN # 2275040) for a tad over $30k on eBay last fall. Sure, I would like to have received a better price -- got $38k the first time it was listed, but the buyer backed out, as some of you may remember.
No matter how much we like our various BMW's, and no matter what we (fans of a particular car) think it is truly "worth", market prices are the true measure of what a collector car is worth, and the E9 has never had the widespread desirability of say, a similar model year 911S, which is an example of a much more desirable car from the standpoint of the collector market. Hell, nice MG's are getting expensive, a car that I (personal opinion here) consider a rolling piece of junk, compared to my preferred contemporary, the Datsun 240Z (of which I own two). 240Z prices, while getting a little stronger recently, aren't enjoying anywhere near the appreciation seen by comparable MGs. E3s (and E12s) are certainly good cars, but there's no widespread interest in the collector market for them, hence the low prices, as well as the low ratings -- which relate to the appreciation potential. So, that's how a very good car that hasn't captured the fancy of the marketplace gets a "C", regardless of its perceived and/or inherent styling or mechanical merits.
All Sports Car Market is doing is reporting on market pricing and trends in the marketplace. It doesn't play favorites. Keith Martin, the founder of SCM, called the recent softening in muscle car prices that have come to pass at the latest big collector auctions. He started out publishing the Alfa Romeo Market Newsletter many years ago, and is now the recognized sage of the collector car scene.
