Maybe, maybe not....the Inka CSL in Miami had been on eBay at least twice before, as I recall, the bidding stalled both (or at least one time) times in the mid to high $30k - $40k range. Also, that car looked like a solid "1" (potential regional/national concours winner, exceptional everywhere) condition -- definitely worth more than my "2+" (very nice driver, potential local show winner).
When it did sell (something like $60k, as I recall), it looked very suspicious to me -- something like half the final price was two bidders duking it out, the "loser" (whom I suspected was a shill) was a recently registered, low feedback bidder, "coincidentally" from Florida. Reinforcing my suspicion, after the sale, I attempted to contact the 2nd high bidder (this is before eBay made contacting a member that you have no formal dealings with as a buyer or seller very difficult) to inform him that I had a nice CSL (i.e. tiptoeing around the "making an offer to sell outside of eBay" rule) that I was "considering listing on eBay soon". Never heard anything back from him....IMHO, if he really was a legit "arm's length" (from the seller) bidder, he would have shown some interest in my "loud hint" and responded back to me. Also, most, if not all, of the CSLs I've seen on eBay in the last few years have never hit whatever the reserve was set at -- another interesting point.
The $150k (I think?) Batmobile was an all-time, shocking high achieved at a European auction last summer -- it even made the cover of Sports Car Market, which basically said, while a very nice, rare car (not very many "real" Batmobiles out there, not really a valid comp to a "regular" CSL), that it probably wasn't indicative of a general market trend for E9s in general, or even E9 CSLs. BUT, that eye-popping price is what finally got me off my keister to get my CSL on the market. Sad to say, I didn't score big, but such is life -- win some, lose some.
(sigh) If only I had bought a Hemi 'Cuda when you could get a primo one for $50k (it wasn't that long ago)......
