you didn't say HOW it died: did it sputter to a stop, did it suddenly cut out completely...?
Sputtering suggests not getting gas. Sudden death suggests electrical.
To test the pump, I'd have redirected the pump output to the bottle, crank and see if it delivers. Yes, the flex hoses can leak or get porous, BTDT. You DO replace these hoses every couple years if you still use the fabric braided type, yes?
Well having tested the pump, check for spark. Take out a plug, lay on valve cover and have assistant crank the engine over. If one's good, they probably all are.

Paul:
Disconnect the input line to the mechanical fuel pump and attach a short piece of hose from the input fitting to a CLEAN 2 litre bottle containing fuel.. Disconnect the low voltage distributor to coil wire (so you don't get no spark) and crank the engine. If the fuel pump is working, the filter bowl should fill with fuel. If not, squirt a little oil into the both pump fittings (to help the valves seal) and retry. If the pump passes this test, then you have a leak in the line from the tank to the engine compartment. There are two sections of rubber hose and the rest is steel fuel line. In the engine compartment there is a rubber hose from the fuel pump to the steel line near the firewall. There is also a very short piece of rubber hose that connects the tank end of the steel line to the tank fitting. This little hose went porous on my first coupe and it suddenly went from hard starting to no start. You will have to take up the trunk floor section over the fuel tank to see this hose.
