Vapor lock is only an issue on really hot days. For a car that has been sitting, the gas in the fuel line runs back to the tank, and the gas in the float bowls slowly evaporates. Ideally, there is enough gas in the bowls to start the car, and then allow the pump to prime itself, suck gas from the tank, fill the filter, and feed the carbs. One solution may be to add a non return valve at the tank - I used one on my E34. I think it was an E34 part.

If you suspect the bowl levels are low, you can add gas with a small funnel into the fuel line the exits the pump. It doesn't take much. Or get a low pressure electric pump.
