John, I would suggest leaving the side mirrors alone and installing a wide angle rear view mirror. There are many different ones on the market but an especially useful one has several individual mirrors across the span that can be individually adjusted - it's like having a rear view camera but even better! Google wide angle rear view mirror to see all the choices.
