[BMWCSRegistry] The Sweet Sound of Exhaust

Steve,
I called those holes in the exhaust pipes, ³cut-outs². I went to my high
school shop teachers shop, drove my parents 56 Merc station wagon with a 312
4 barrel carb across the ditch in front of his shop (no lifts). He went
under the car, welded ³cut-outs on each down pipe and I capped them off with
a cast aluminum cap with gasket. My parent never knew, they never found out
about the Mallory distributor I put in there either. And I had fun dusting
Corvettes with that big Merc wagon, in the late 50¹s. I got to the point
where I could remove those hot ³cut-out² caps on the side of the road in
minutes. At the time I was in high school, in Jacksonville, FL and remember
going to the drags to watch this guy, Don Garlits, race his Swamp Rat front
engined dragster. Back then, I would take my camera and stand aft of the
flag man, in the center of the drag strip, and take pictures of the
dragsters coming at me on both sides. Course, back then there were no safety
parts and many dragster drivers lost their legs when the clutch exploded and
severed their legs.
My, how times have changed, those were the days.
