My 635 is a July 81 and I understand towards the end of the last E12 chassis
635 run so your comment about 1982 for the switch to E28 chassis sounds
about right.
 
Why were there differences in the rear end of the E9 - and what were they?

As I recall the e3/e9/e12 will share front suspension components but the
rear of the e9 will be different from the e3/e12.  Also if I am not mistaken
switchover for the e12 vs. e28 based six series was in '82 to '83.

OK thanks - that does clarify something for me. This has all the M635 stuff
(recarros etc - Note NOT M6 with twin cam) but I was never sure. Now I know.
 
It is definitely 635 on E12. Where are the similarities now?

M635 chassis was never E12 based. Only early non M E24's.
