I also have a Valentine One which I have used successfully in the mid-Atlantic for about 10 years. I was caught once in VA by a trooper following me from quite a distance in the early hours of the morning while it was still dark so I couldn't see him following me. He turned on his radar, I made the mistake of hitting the brakes and then he pulled me over, asked me about the detector and gave me an additional $50 fine for using a detector - they don't take the detectors anymore. It's saved my but so many times that it's worth the risk. I use it in VA all the time. Now I just use the parking brake so the brake lights don't come on. I think that the troopers also use instant on radar when they are behind you to see who brakes so they can figure out who to pull over.

Since I live in the"Last Colony" and have to cross VA going south, I often wondered what fines VA and other states charge when you are caught with a radar detector where they are illegal? Do they just give a fine only? If so, I rather be fined for having a radar detector than get a ticket for speeding with the additional points than deal with the insurance company issues afterward.
Normally I turn my detector off until I hit NC or MD lines.
 Thanks,

Yes, I am THAT Mike Valentine.
My wife and I own a ’72 3.0 CSi which is currently in restoration.

That's pretty cool. I still have my Escort from the '80's. Never failed me, except once, when I couldn't hide it fast enough from the VA police, and got ticketed just for having one. With the legal limits at 70+, I don't feel the need anymore. But back in the double nickel days...
