OH yes it is true. Just came back from Holland where it was strongly suggested to keep my Valentine in the bag. The police thing is called the RDD(radar detector-detector). When pulled over your detector gets confiscated, plus Euro250 fine. If you think you can hide it in the car, and you won't admit having it, the police will take the whole car to the station and search for it there. Even higher fines.

The country is becoming a pain I am telling you. A year earlier I had received two fines in the mail. I ignored them. I mean; Euro38 for 6km over the speedlimit at 120km/h on the highway?! And I drove 70km/h in the city where 50km/h was the limit. Euro140 sir?! The country is starting to get into my business too much(sounds familiar?)
"Two fines combined Euro178=$250 at current exchange rate"
I ignored untill I tried to leave for Africa via the airport last month in Amsterdam. Passport control asked me to step aside and asked to pay the fines or wait in the pen untill I would!!! I was not leaving the airport!

But as always, the RDD is being outsmarted again. See enclosed article(with some dutch translation needed)

I read that in Canada the Mounties have devices that detect a radar detector even if it is turned off as long as it is plugged in. Supposedly, the detector sends out some kind of a signal. Using a radar detector, on or off, is a primary offense in CA. They can pull you over and confiscate it just for having one. But hey, the Valium is really cheap.

Is any of this true? Should I www.snopes.com it? Great site. That's where I found out that most of the winners of the www.darwinawards.com never happened.

Check out both sites if you haven't already.
