James and Couperini,
Still using an old Escort?- you have been fortunate.
VA still using their storm trooper tactics to confiscate a detector?
Gotta think fast and hide it quick.
Even CT and MI dumped their ban - don't know about DC but from what I
have seen on the Beltway, nobody gives damn anyway and the police are
not anxious to enter that Mongolian Cluster F at ck traffic.
Valentine claims their unit cannot be detected by the Gestapo out
there. I tend to agree from my experience over many years. Including
in Canada on trips to Toronto on the QE Way.
Which, on the last several dozen miles into that city, becomes the
closest I have ever seen in North America to the balls out
Autobahn. I find it great fun and that the Canadians are generally
more polite than our USA drivers.
Except in the West and Texas and selected places, where is the limit
over 70. KS once had 80 on its Turnpike but is it back?
In PA we still have 65 max anywhere although, to their credit, the
Troopers are not too over eager to give chase unless over 75 or
driving like an idiot. I wait for a reply to my inquiry to my State
law makers about police ticketing the use of cell phones, failure to
signal for a lane change or left lane hogs.
But we do still have what seems a rather arbitrary 55 mph in some places.
Traffic engineering standards have been developed using the 85th
percentile to set a limit.
How many jurisdictions bother to use it? Not enough revenue in it.
Check out the major group acting to help drivers in many ways and not
just speed although they were a major force in finally revoking the
National 55 limit - how many of you out there remember that bit of
Federal stupidity? NMA National Motorist Association:
www.motorists.org You may not agree with all of their positions on
traffic and driving issues but I heartily endorse them. Joining them
is a few bucks very well spent.
Random stops with no cause, road blocks, traffic light cameras,
kangaroo traffic courts, better training for young people than the
basketball coach in High School, institute and enforce lane changing
signal and left lane bandit laws, consideration of retesting of
"Golden" age drivers (which does now include me but don't believe the
"Golden" horse hockey), how to fight a ticket, and much more
Nader & gang just want us to go slower - the magic solution. I have
yet to hear their coming out for much else that is wrong. When speed
has been shown to not being a major cause of highway accidents per
million miles driven. It's inattention, incompetence and
intoxication. Maybe I missed it if Ralph, Joan Claybrook and
Clarence Ditlow ever addressed these issues.
