Curious.
A country that permits the possession, sale and open use of hash and
marijuana employs Gestapo tactics on the highway? I'm past smoking
anything but there go my plans to retire to Holland and open a Monty
Python type cheese shop.
Does that lovely town of Haarlem till have the classiest red light
district in Europe? And what of the quaint and delightful Sailor's
Quarter in Amsterdam?
Bewildered here in the Land of the Free, etc.
I tend to doubt that a RADAR detector emits a signal when turned off
- perhaps Mike V can further advise us on the properties of his
terrific device.
And yes, NEVER hit the brakes if you know or suspect a trooper is
trailing you and even if you are legal or close to it. It tells him
you have identified a bogie and feel a bit nervous, if not paranoid.
Not unlike a Toreador flipping his red flag but you don't or better
not have a sword underneath.
The paradox is that on a heavily traveled road, where speed can be a
consideration you are much safer from being busted than all by
yourself where higher speeds are more appropriate. And never trust
headlights coming up from behind when alone at night. It's how police
can afford to use pricey sports cars to trap you - and the cop behind
the wheel has a lot of fun too. Some deserve it for the hazardous but
sometimes very dull job they have if not abused as revenue collectors.
Ease off and gradually lose speed. If an exit is coming up,
probably wise to take it (and signal) as a good reason for dropping
10 or 20 mph even if the usual 1 or 2 miles out. A downshift will
also help.
And apply the hand brake (also known as parking or emergency) if you
really must, but carefully lest you really generate a problem by
locking up. It was not designed for use at speed.
