Michael:

Leave that console alone! You don't want to go there unless you have LOTS
of time available and a need to fix something else. Wait til your heater
core goes bad, at which time you just drive in warm weather.

You can access the gauges by removing the trim panel under the steering
wheel and getting a 10-year-old child with tiny hands to reach up amidst the
wires and loosen (not remove) those knurled knobs. Then the gauges twist
slightly and pull forward. Maybe you'll get lucky and not electrocute the
kid. If his hands are small enough, he may be able to reach the gauges thru
the dropdown panel for the fuses/hood release.

The alternative I like best is to just remove the entire upper dash pad
incuding the eyebrow over the gauge cluster as one piece. This gives you
great access to the gauges from above -- which you will need if you try to
fix the clock because you will have to keep tweaking the clock speed
adjustment. When replacing the dash pad, just leave the nuts off the back
for easier access next time. It's not going anywhere.
