So with a 20mm offset and a 4 mm spacer, you've got an actual offset of
16mm, and as you say, it is close to the strut.

I'm not picking on you Peter, just trying to give people accurate
advice, and I've been down this road a time or two.  On my car, an 8x16"
wheel with a 20mm offset would clear the strut by about 2mm, but the
225/50-16 tires rubbed.  With that particular tire/wheel, I didn't have
enough room between the tire and fender to use a spacer.  E9
construction was not exactly precise, so on the front at least, there
seems to be no consistent rule on how big you can go without trimming.
The back is roomier.
