People do it all the time but the thought of messing around by
rolling perfectly good fenders gives me the cold robbies. Especially
since we all know built in Coupe weaknesses thanks to the genius
of Karmann,
Call me getting old and less adventuresome (both true) but Ilse has
treated me right and I treat her right. And I respect her 36 years of
age and frequently drive her all Summer but she is not a $75K+ BMW
with Bangle styling and iDrive. (And I am grateful for not having
either although ABS would be nice when I might get a little careless)

The only upgrade gift I gave her is to dump the absurd original oil
filter, replace the very inadequate 5 blade fan with 9 and install a
simple Allison/Crane ignition to replace the antique points.
Everything else is replaced as needed by OEM or close to it bits and
pieces. If at all possible, always new, or sort of new after decades
in some Munich warehouse.

Over the years, I paid close attention to unusual sounds when driving
- it has almost always saved me from disaster. As for a "little
rubbing against the strut", I would not carry a spare strut but be to
sure have the correct spare tire and hope it does not give up at 85
when passing a log truck, A little rubbing somehow adds up to a lot
of damage.
