"SCM" is a fine piece of work, yet not infallible.
I like Jim's work, he's always 'spot on' and, should there ever be reason,
he's first to make a correction, with mia culpa.
(He also writes a fine column in "The 356 Registry" publication.)
I buy "Hemmings" for the ads only. Don't know that I've ever paused to read
anything they write or feature though.
Of course, I read "Playboy" and never look at the photos either.
This week I had the experience of seeing what happens when a perfectly good
and sound early Porsche 911S was met by a fellow who restored old trucks.
It wasn't pretty- if you were a 911S fan, but thoroughly acceptable results
if you like diamond plate, button tuft, flat black on any exposed surface,
chopped top, Frenched exterior details, with calved on 6" wide galvanized
sheet metal fender flares.
Oh, did I mention the V8?
To each his own, I guess.
We can never make them new again.
No 'pro' can either.
Better than new? It's all about the Benjamin's then.
Being bothered about amateur restorations should be equal to being bothered
by over restored examples.
Where does one draw the line- and who's to say that's right or wrong?
