After my last posting, I tried removing the gear from a derelict 4 speed and
could not.
One of the posters on the e9coupe.com forum made a tool. I'm looking into
that now.

Meanwhile, since the trans I am experimenting on is pretty near worthless, I
may try brute force next!

Well, with the appropriate thin-walled deep socket I have removed the drive
flanges from both trannies, and I'm looking at the speedo drive gear in my
4-speed and trying to figure out how to pull it off the shaft. It's pressed
on pretty tight. There is very little clearance around the sides to get the
jaws of any of the pullers I own in there.
The web site Bill pointed to makes it sound simple (just take off the drive
flange and pull off the gear, ta-da). The blue books don't give any
instructions on this operation, so they're no help.
Any more suggestions on the proper technique?
- Charlie

That reminds me, I need to order one of those. I've got two trannies that
need speedo gears, and the shaved-down socket I made cracked last time.
And Charlie P, x2 on Bill's comments. It's not a bad job at all.

Please note: the large nut that holds on the drive flange at the back end
of the trans may require a thin-wall socket. That's how the pros do it. I
was just able to fit my Craftsman socket in there and get enough hold on the
nut to bring it out. You may have to reduce the outside diameter of your
socket to get in there.

Charlie,
Look at this website:

It should answer your questions.
(You don't have to disassemble the whole trans).

Ah, that makes sense, Tony. I see in the exploded parts diagram that the
worm gear/spacer is located right behind the shaft seal.
Do you mean that I will have to take the rear case off (involving propane
and flames and such) and remove the entire shaft (with its gazillion gear
teeth) to get that little gear off, or can I somehow just pull it off once
the output drive flange and the rear seal are removed?
For some reason, the prospect of pulling the main shaft out of the
transmission makes me nervous, and I know that whatever the answer, I have
to do it twice, once on the donor, and again on the new tranny.

Charlie,
You're going to have to pull the output shaft and install the drive gear, as
the transmissions that lack the speedo cable drive also lack the gear on the
output that drives the speedo cable drive... they have a spacer in place of
the gear. You can drive out the speedo drive cap when you've got the output
shaft out.

I have finally launched my long-delayed 5-speed upgrade project. I have an
'85 Getrag 265/6, one of those newer units that still has the mechanical
speedo drive provision in the case, but it's sealed up with a plug. To
transplant the drive from my old tranny, I have to remove the plug. I need
some advice on how to remove the steel plug from the alloy case without
messing up the case. I've heard about "driving it out", but when I apply
hammer and drift to one edge of the plug to knock it askew, it seems to want
to just move straight in, so I stopped. I haven't removed the drive flange
and rear seal yet, but I doubt there will be enough clearance from the
inside when I do that to be able to knock it outward. I thought about
drilling a hole in the plug, tapping it, and inserting a bolt to pull on
somehow, but I worry about adding extra steel shavings to the internals.&n

Anyone done this?
