Today I decided I was going to see why my shift lever turns freely.  It looks like those rubber grommet like things are the only grip on the shift mechanism, and they are a bit hard and loose, so no grip and easy spins.

Any advice on this project before I go looking for new grommets or get out the glue?

Anyone have experience with the short shift kits I see advertised?  I certainly have little or no reason to want a shorter shift, just curious.
