Dave,
Unless your engine has been rebuilt, that is likely the original pump.  
The early pumps were known to be marginal, in particular they would lose 
pressure if you braked hard...  Sounds like your pump needs to be 
replaced.  BMW revised the pump at some point, possibly during the life 
of the e12 5er?  Maybe later.  Anyway, there is a better pump 
available.  I think there may be a better pan baffle used in later 
engines too.  It's been a while since I thought about this, maybe 
someone with better recall will chime in.
